Here’s a list of both proper star and constellation names as well as names that mean or translate to “star.”
Most of the star baby names listed are unheard of but sound incredibly trendy!
And some shorten into perfectly adorable nicknames — I’ve included them in parenthesis.
STAR BABY NAMES FOR GIRLS
Alya
A triple star system in the constellation of Serpens. A beautiful, fresh star baby name reminiscent of Ayla, and Dalia.
Aquila (Quila)
This constellation’s name comes from the Latin word for eagle and represents the bird that carried Zeus/Jupiter’s thunderbolts in Greek-Roman mythology.
Ara
This lovely star baby name is both a constellation as well as a vintage girl’s name. It’s also the shortened version of Arabella.
Atria (Tria)
A star from the constellation of Triangulum Australe. It’s a strong girl’s name fit for a fantasy novel’s queen, and Tria makes the cutest nickname.
Aster
An ancient Greek word meaning “star.” It’s also a beautiful flower that exists in a variety of vibrant colours.
Astra
Latin for “star.” This name has a trendy but vintage vibe.
Auriga
A constellation that’s name is Latin for “the charioteer.” In the tarot, the chariot is a card of willpower and determination.
Bellatrix (Bella/Trixie)
This gorgeous name is from a star in the constellation of Orion. And how cute is the nickname Trixie?
Capella (Ella)
A star in the constellation of Auriga (see meaning above). An adorable girl’s name that can be shortened to the ever-popular, Ella.
Carina
A constellation that’s name is the Latin word for hull or keel of a ship. It’s also a girl’s name derived from the Italian word “Carino” meaning “cute.”
Chara
A star in the constellation of Canes Venatici. It makes a soft and feminine girl’s name.
Danica
This vibrant girl’s name is found in Slavic folklore as the personification of the morning star or “daystar.”
Estella (Stella)
Latin for “star” and a beautiful, vintage name.
Irena
A star found along the border of the Hercules constellation (but not part of it). This lovely star baby name is also derived from the Greek word for peace.
Libra
A constellation and one of the twelve signs of the zodiac (September 23-October 22). The name is Latin for weighing scales — an image that appears in the justice card of the tarot. Perfect for a babe destined to bring positive change to the world.
Lyra
A constellation and a gorgeous girl’s name that’s a fresh take on the more traditional Lara or Laura. It’s also the name of the main character in Philip Pullman’s popular fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials.
Maia
A star in the constellation of Taurus (April 20-May 20). This beautiful girl’s name, with the more common spelling “Maya,” is found in both Greek and Roman mythology.
Meissa (Mei)
A star in the constellation of Orion. Also, a girl’s Arabic name meaning “the shining one.” So lovely!
Meridiana (Meri)
A star in the constellation of Corona. This pretty star baby name could also be divided into a first and middle name: Meri Diana.
Mintaka (Mini)
A star system in the constellation of Orion, seen as the first star in Orion’s belt. In mystic tradition, it’s said to have been a water-based planet where mermaid-like beings lived. It would make an incredibly bold name or you could shorten it to “Mini.”
Mira
A star in the constellation of Cetus. It’s also a charming girl’s name with many different meanings. In the Romance languages, is related to the Latin word for “wonder.”
Sagitta (Gitta)
A constellation that’s name is Latin for “arrow.” A strong name for a girl.
Seren
This name has a calm, soft vibe and is Welsh for “star.”
Sidra
This Arabic name means “Goddess of the stars.”
Sutara (Tara)
A beautiful Hindi name with a boho vibe meaning “holy star.”
Talitha (Tali/Litha)
A star system in the constellation of Ursa Major. This sweet name has Biblical origins based on a story of Jesus restoring life to a young child.
Tuiren
A star in the constellation Canes Venatici. This is also an adorable Irish girl’s name.
Vela
A constellation. This soft yet elegant name is Latin for the sails of a ship.
Zaniah
A triple star system in the zodiac constellation of Virgo (August 23-September 22). It has a lovely, smooth vibe.
STAR BABY NAMES FOR BOYS
Aldebaran (Baran)
A star in the zodiac constellation of Taurus (April 20-May 20). Baran, an updated version of the more traditional, Baron, would make an adorable shortened version of the name.
Aries
A zodiac constellation (March 21-April 19) with a name that’s Latin for “ram.” People born under this zodiac sign are known for being bold and ambitious.
Atlas
A triple star system in the zodiac constellation of Taurus (April 20-May 20). In Greek mythology, Atlas was a Titan with great strength. It would make a strong, modern name.
Beid
A star in the constellation of Eridanus. This would make a unique boy’s name reminiscent of Reid.
Castor
A star in the constellation of Gemini (May 1-June 20). More often a surname, Castor is strong, and a unique alternative to the more common Carter and Casper.
Crux
A constellation that’s also known as the Southern Cross (Crux is Latin for cross). An alternative to the trendy name, Cruz.
Felis
A star in the constellation of Hydra. This almost Celtic-sounding name has a trendy vibe reminiscent of Felix and Phineas.
Grus
A constellation that’s name is Latin for “crane” (the bird). Cranes have positive symbolic meanings in many different cultures. In Greek Mythology, cranes were sacred to Hermes. And in many Indigenous cultures, cranes are associated with good luck.
Heze
A star in the zodiac constellation of Virgo (August 23-September 22). It would make a bold, unique name.
Keid
A triple star system in the constellation of Eridanus. And a unique but familiar-sounding name for a boy.
Leo
A zodiac constellation (July 22-August 22) that’s a fire sign, and its name is Latin for lion. People born under this zodiac sign are known for their self-assurance and natural leadership.
Lynx
A constellation. Named after the animal, whose name is derived from the Greek word “leukos” meaning “bright light.”
Nash
A star in the zodiac constellation of Sagittarius (November 22-December 21). It’s also a trendy boy’s name that’s associated with the ash tree (see my detailed tree baby name list here).
Orion (Rion)
A well-known constellation. In Greek mythology, Orion was a mighty hunter turned into a constellation by Zeus. Rion makes a fantastic boy’s name — a great alternative to the widely-used, Ryan.
Phoenix
A constellation named after the mythical bird — a symbol of hope and renewal. And an extremely cool boy’s name.
Rigel
A star in the constellation of Orion. This name has a sense of strength and determination and is an uncommon alternative to Nigel.
Taurus
A zodiac constellation (April 20th-May 20th) that’s an earth sign represented by the bull. People born under this zodiac sign are known to be dependable and honest.
